THE SCHAUFLER COLLECTION

In the spacious rooms of a former industrial hall, contemporary art becomes an experience.

In temporary exhibitions and based on Peter Schaufler’s (1940–2015) and Christiane Schaufler-Münch’s (1934-2025) impressive art collection, SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen presents art of the 20th and 21st centuries (painting, sculpture, photography and installation art). Since the museum’s opening in June 2010, the SCHAUWERK belongs to the leading locations for contemporary art in southern Germany.

For more than three decades, the Sindelfingen entrepreneur Peter Schaufler and his wife were building up a private art collection. Today, it comprises more than 3,500 works. Among the collectors’ first acquisitions were works of the ZERO movement and its pioneers such as Lucio Fontana. The reduction and clarity of these works characterize the collection.

Museum visitors meet great names in contemporary art including Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Katharina Grosse, and Anish Kapoor.

Furthermore, the collection of photographs impresses with significant works by important representatives of the genre such as Andreas Gursky, Thomas Demand, Candida Höfer, Wolfgang Tillmans, and others.

Works by Günther Uecker, Dan Flavin, and Donald Judd are already part of the canon of contemporary art. However, lesser-known positions in the minimalist tradition are part of the collection as well.

Moreover, the SCHAUWERK dedicates large monographic exhibitions that include international loans to artists represented in the collection. In recent years, special exhibitions on Rupprecht Geiger, Antony Gormley, and Tom Sachs have been realized.
